I'd say he should have pushed harder, quite a lot harder - assuming this isn't some sort of Beyond the Fringe comedy. If you are dealing with a psychopath - which this fellow seems to be, either really or affecting to be - you don't learn anything about what lies beneath without engaging the guy on his own terms. At least, that's one of the approaches I would countenance.
